Amazon parrots are very good at talking and imitating sounds, almost as well as the african grey. Amazons are very energetic, playful, social creatures that crave lots of interaction with their humans. Babies that are hand-raised, well socialized and have bonded early with human companions make the best pets. More than any other parrot species, Amazons are very well known for their strong and often moody characteristics. They can be, at different times, cuddly, loud, quiet, stubborn, silly, jealous, playfully aggressive or irritable. They will play and fight with their toys for hours on end. Sometimes, however, an Amazon will become possessive of a toy or person and may become aggressive towards anyone who tries to interfere. Amazon parrots are definitely not for every pet owner. They need much more attention and understanding than most people would expect.
Amazon Parrots require a large cage of at least 36" x 24" filled with lots of large and entertaining wood toys. Their daily diet should include fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts, seed, grains, cooked beans and brown rice. A high quality pellet can be added but should not make up more than 40% of their daily intake.
